Family News Feed

Humanitarian
Family News Feed is a health informatics tool designed for families of patients to feel like they are with their loved ones, even when they aren't, through SMS-based status updates.
In healthcare, parents and guardians of patients often struggle to stay informed of their loved one’s medical status. This lack of updated information stresses guardians when they are away from their loved ones in medical care. Family News Feed provides a tool for parents and guardians to monitor their loved ones in hospital care, even while they are away. The tool provides consistent updates on changes to the patient's status through SMS-based notifications. By keeping guardians updated, Family News Feed alleviates some of the stress of not physically accompanying a patient. In addition, Family News Feed also serves as an accessible dashboard for clinicians to monitor the notifications and its history.

Our tool achieves this goal through utilization of a traditional full stack and Cerner's implementation of the FHIR electronic medical data standard. Using a full stack allows us to make quick, efficient, and safe transfers of medical data through the FHIR standard from a medical database, to a clinician's screen, and to a guardian's phone within one system. We have designed Family News Feed to be able to grow in scope and be "plug-and-play" with other hospitals and medical databases.
